Build the implementation team early
An ERP connects decisions across departments. Invite the people who understand sales, purchasing, stock, finance, and reporting into the discovery process. Include everyday users alongside managers: they often know where the process depends on an unwritten rule.
Name a business owner who can settle priorities and a process owner for each area. Implementation questions need decisions, and an unclear approval structure can leave the configuration waiting for answers.
Test the whole journey
A screen can look correct while the end-to-end process remains incomplete. Test representative transactions across departments. Follow an order through availability checks, fulfilment, invoicing, and the relevant reporting.
Include unusual but plausible scenarios: a partial delivery, a cancelled request, a returned item, or a change after approval. Agree the expected behaviour before the system is used for live work.
Treat migration as a business task
Importing records is only one part of migration. Teams need to agree which data belongs in the new system, who can correct it, and how to check the result. Duplicate suppliers, inconsistent units, and unclear opening balances need business decisions.
- Identify the owner of each source dataset.
- Agree the required fields and naming conventions.
- Run a trial import and inspect representative records.
- Reconcile the agreed totals before approving the migration.
Train for roles, then support the transition
Training should help people complete their own work, including the situations that occur less often. Short role-specific guides and realistic practice exercises can be more useful than a tour of every available feature.
After launch, give users a clear route for questions and assign someone to distinguish training needs from configuration issues. A phased rollout can create space to resolve those issues before adding more scope. The system becomes valuable when the team can use it with understanding.
